Founded in 1986 in response to the HIV/AIDS epidemic, Corktown Health today provides a full suite of medical and supportive services designed for LGBTQ+ patients to bridge health disparities among a population that continues to face significant barriers to quality, stigma-free care. Corktown Health currently serves approximately 5,000 patients each year.
In April 2023, IFF provided a loan of approximately $870,000 to Corktown Health for the acquisition of an 11,443-square-foot commercial facility in Hazel Park, MI, that the nonprofit is converting into its second community health clinic. Set to open in 2024, the clinic will build on Corktown Health’s proven model for providing high-quality, affirming health care to the LGBTQ+ community and will include 8-10 medical exam rooms, six dental chairs, a pharmacy, and community space. With its expansion, Corktown Health will be able to serve an additional 1,500 patients per year, while also creating 30 new jobs. And, by opening a location in Hazel Park, Corktown Health’s services will be more accessible in an area in metro Detroit with a large population of LGBTQ+ residents. The clinic will be located in a thriving business district along a SMART bus route, further increasing accessibility to the services that will be offered in the location.
A longtime IFF client, Corktown Health worked with IFF’s Real Estate Solutions team in Detroit to complete a financial feasibility study before moving forward with the purchase. As Corktown Health proceeds with its plans for the facility, IFF’s real estate team is serving as the organization’s owner’s representative.
