Rising from Ashes to Community Triumph

In Detroit’s Morningside neighborhood, Morningside Café stands as a testament to local pride and entrepreneurship. Jeffrey Lewis II, a community member, utilized a Motor City Match grant in collaboration with TechTown Detroit to shape his vision, transforming the café into a symbol of community pride.

On January 4, 2023, tragedy struck when a neighboring business fire, caused by negligence, engulfed Morningside Café. Despite initial insurance claim denials and a prolonged third-party process, Jeffrey was determined to rebuild. He was encouraged by the unwavering local support, including from members of Detroit City Council.

Facing nearly a year of setbacks, Morningside Café still managed to secure $185,000, including $97,200 from insurance proceeds. With the infusion of additional financial backing from Opportunity Resource Fund (OppFund), the café emerged in late fall of 2023. Jeffrey aligned its grand opening to coincide with celebration of other activities with the East Warren/Cadieux Neighborhood Redevelopment Plan, contributing to the broader vision of community revitalization.

This café’s story intersects with Detroit’s Strategic Neighborhood Fund’s focus on mixed-use development, parks, and mobility enhancements in the E. Warren Corridor. OHM Advisors, leading the plan, prioritized community input for a vibrant neighborhood. Jeffrey Lewis remarked, “Morningside Café is about much more than coffee; it’s a symbol of our community’s strength. Between the support from OppFund and our committed community, we’re literally rising from the ashes.”

Morningside Café is a beacon in the area’s transformation plan. In many ways, it mirrors Detroit’s revival. This city’s heartbeat pulses through its communities. The Café embodies that spirit of resilience!
